The king and the artist a la henry

"Once upon a time, there was a king who ruled a great and glorious nation. Favourite amongst his subjects was the court painter of whom he was very proud. Everybody agreed this wizzened old man pianted the greatest pictures in the whole kingdom and the king would spend hours each day gazing at them in wonder. However, one day a dirty and dishevelled stranger presented himself at the court claiming that in fact he was the greatest painter in the land. The indignant king decreed a competition would be held between the two artists, confident it would teach the vagabond an embarrassing lesson. Within a month they were both to produce a masterpiece that would out do the other. After thirty days of working feverishly day and night, both artists were ready. They placed their paintings, each hidden by a cloth, on easels in the great hall of the castle. As a large crowd gathered, the king ordered the cloth be pulled first from the court artist’s easel. Everyone gasped as before them was revealed a wonderful oil painting of a table set with a feast. At its centre was an ornate bowl full of exotic fruits glistening moistly in the dawn light. As the crowd gazed admiringly, a sparrow perched high up on the rafters of the hall swooped down and hungrily tried to snatch one of the grapes from the painted bowl only to hit the canvas and fall down dead with shock at the feet of the king. ’Aha!’ exclaimed the king. ’My artist has produced a painting so wonderful it has fooled nature herself, surely you must agree that he is the greatest painter who ever lived!’ But the vagabond said nothing and stared solemnly at his feet. ’Now, pull the blanket from your painting and let us see what you have for us,’ cried the king. But the tramp remained motionless and said nothing. Growing impatient, the king stepped forward and reached out to grab the blanket only to freeze in horror at the last moment. ’You see,’ said the tramp quietly, ’there is no blanket covering the painting. This is actually just a painting of a cloth covering a painting. And whereas your famous artist is content to fool nature, I’ve made the king of the whole country look like a clueless twat.

well here it is, lots learnt from the project. fallen in love with bodypaint and decided to just have fun with the water effects so dont hate me for how rubbish they are hahaha. quite a bit done in post but ill leave it to you to decide what was.

decided to use bodypaint over zbrush for this texturing job as its a medium closeup of hugh and wanted it to really pop and seams seem to always be an issue in zbrush.

oh and here is a pose test for the whole scene that im planning on. maybe just one character will remain of the victims of my feme fatal. a poker game gone wrong maybe?

just a quick first pass render in maya with normal maps and low poly models. looking a bit gritty as far as normal maps go but some love and time with them should be all it needs. i also dont want to texture these models just let the polys and normals do the talking.

the figure in white of Rembrants "Nightwatch" has always really jumped out at me so i spent a few hours modeling and zbrushing him today, boxingday. I hope everyone had a very merry christmas!

Ok so here is a quick render of the skin of the beast, the only parts textured at the moment are the beak bone area and about 90% of the skin, i want to do a few itterations of the horn, maybe with some kind of trible engravings in it or something. not sure yet. and the chin horns need work. also if anyone can give me a few pointers in bringing out the colours in my textures then i would love to hear them they seem a bit lost in translation, along with my hi-def bump maps. i dunno, something to do with render options maybe anyway. peace and thanks for reading, Henry

ok the head to neck are pretty much done as far as textures go, and thats just the diffuse pass. as i start to paint weight maps on it to make the parts pop that need to pop. any comments or crits are always welcome! love to all. Henry

right a more styalized still of my skin shader. not as realistic but i think its got more personality. ive attached a picture of the hypershade im using if it will help anyone. using the wonderful mix20layer which you can find on http://www.pixero.com/ to plug the mia_material_x insted of the spec channel on the skin shader. as the misss fast skin shaders spec channel has some rubbish phong settings. no one likes them. so here you are result and how i got there. love to all.

Bugger. I got myself all worked up over this apartment i was visiting . it was perfect. so so perfect. when i get there, "there are 10 other people interested" she says. my belly just dropped. no way am i going to get that flat. but coffee and ciggys later, im back on track and ready to rock on some new places now. but im tired. being english its bloody hard work keeping a smile plastered on my face. we are naturally cynical people. "are you having a great day" just grates against my soul. and is "have an amazing day" an order? not just that, i left my telly on last night and i woke up with a feeling that i should be buying "resurgence" to make me a stronger, more powerful woman.

Right, lets do this. Just 4 days to go till I fly away to BC and im ready. Just been paid a fat wedge of cash, going out for drinks tonight and spending the last few days with my girlfriend and my family... I should really think about packing but thats not going to be hard. Just six days to go now till im off to Vancouver to start my course at the Vancouver Film School. Pretty scared, very excited. Just cant wait to get their and get settled with Rosie my girlfriend. As you can see I have an air of quiet contemplation at the moment... Almost saying.. what does the future hold? Where will I be in 2 years time? Will the glue on my chin ever allow me the use of my right hand? All these questions are in there.
